There is no such thing as a “broken family.” Family is family, and is not determined by marriage certificates, divorce papers, and adoption documents.

Families are made in the heart. The only time family becomes null is when those ties in the heart are cut. If you cut those ties, those people are not your family. If you make those ties, those people are your family. And if you hate those ties, those people will still be your family because whatever you hate will always be with you.

This post means so much to me. In 1996, my husband Russell and I adopted two children. Overnight we became a “mixed race through the miracle of adoption” family of four. Terina and Christian are our beautiful miracles, our gifts from God, our children. in 1998 we moved into a house near Chicago, IL. In the late 90’s in our “white suburb”, we got lots of looks- by people of all colors. Some were affirming and celebratory, others- not so much. I’ve heard it all- ” Do you have real children, too?” was the one that really made me shake my head – hard! I have never stopped thanking God for our children, they are forever my most wonderful children that grew inside my heart.
Thank you so much❤️

Some of us may not deserve a family. And sometimes, our family does not deserve us.

This reminds me of the old saying, “Blood is thicker than water”. A phrase that people like to quote to justify keeping toxic family members around. However, that’s not the full saying.
It’s really, “The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb” which sums up everything mentioned in this post. The people you choose to have a relationship with, to nurture, to care for, to love, those people are your family. It doesn’t matter if you share genetics or DNA.

True. Marriage is important, but not necessarily the measure of a healthy relationship. Healthy relationships are the measure of a healthy family.

Charles Manson carved a family out of lost souls. The Five Families of New York wielded family ties as dark powerful crime organizations. Family is made of many things, not all good.

Agreed, being a family oriented person myself, I find that we sometimes can’t choose who our family members are. But at the end of the day, better or worse, family is family, there’s people we can choose to be family. Thankfully, I have a close-knit family, some blood sommarriage. Some though marraige.

I feel like as humans we try to categorize things..define words in a very limited way. It is nice to see a beautiful article like yours pushing beyond the confines of conventional definitions

Family is not necessarily blood. At times it’s the people that are not family that have your back the most.

Families are made in the heart, where love and connection bind us more tightly than blood ever could.
